Online Payment Processing for Ohio Department Of Aging
This web application was originally implemented to allow Nursing Home Administrators to pay for their license renewals online (instead of sending checks which tended to get lost, routed to wrong departments, etc.) But, as soon as it was complete, other related departments clamored to use the same system — and so, the project was expanded to handle more kinds of payments.
Value and Impact
Before this system was in place, the various sub-departments of the Ohio Department of Aging processed thousands of paper checks per quarter. Many were misrouted or lost because the payers did not provide adequate information to attribute each check to the right account. This resulted in large amounts of staff time being expended to find and apply checks where account information was missing.
The online payment system achieved 90% participation resulting in large savings of staff time. The time was saved in processing checks (no longer needed) and answering inquiries from consumers about the status of their invoices because consumers could look up their invoices online to see the status.
